The Mountain Shadows Resort in Paradise Valley is pleased to
announce its new exhibition Recent Work. Local artist Matt Magee,
known for work that evokes secret codes and symbols which become
signposts of our times, presents works that celebrate the color red.

Magee was born in Paris, France in 1961. His visual vocabulary was shaped by years of traveling the world with his geologist and archaeologist father. As a young artist, he moved to New York City, where the spirit of the club scene and vibrant art culture made a lasting impact on his work and aesthetic. Magee relocated to Phoenix in 2012, and operates his studio out of the historic Cattle Track Arts Compound in Scottsdale.

The exhibition Recent Work is a celebration of the color red — the color of energy, passion, and action. The phrase “red-letter day” originated in the late 1300s. Historically, handmade ecclesiastical calendars were highlighted with red ink to signify days of importance and opportunity. Today, we use the phrase to express our delight in any day that is memorable.

Drawing inspiration from the 1960s minimalist movement, Magee combines his fascination with language and his command of design sensibilities in carefully arranged compositions and sculptural installations. He intentionally utilizes throwaway materials with an emphasis on accumulative and iterative processes, such as stacking, repetition, and sequencing. Intended as a means of record-keeping, Magee’s work evokes secret codes and symbols, which become signposts of our times.

This is the first exhibition at The Gallery organized by Cece Cole, its new curator. Cole is an artist, entrepreneur, and curator based in Scottsdale. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Media Studies from the University of Louisiana, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. Her sculptural installations and artworks have been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. In 2020, Cole founded Good Company Contemporary, an online platform that features limited-edition designs and highlights her collaborative projects. With her strong knowledge of the arts and passion for the community, Cece is eager to bring new artists and exhibitions to The Gallery.
